Cock-a-Doodle-Doo. Farewell to the Roos.

Two of our roosters are hitting the road tonight.  While I am a bit sad to see them go, it is also mixed with a healthy dose of relief.  Their personalities are coming out and they are so stinkin’ funny. And that hair, oh that hair!  Really, there is nothing like it!

But as the Babylady has started saying “Esma-mumblemumblesomethingIcan’tmakeout! Stop that noise. Crazy chicken!”  It is definitely time for their departure.

We ended up with 3 roos out of our 7 baby chicks.  We are (at least for now) technically allowed roosters in the city as they fall under a noise ordinance and aren’t banned outright).  So, we are keeping 1 (the prettiest, biggest & quietest) for now- at least until he becomes a pain.

Without further ado, introducing:  Jesse, the Buff (bearded) Polish Chicken and Esmeralda, the White Crested Black Polish.

Jesse is top dog. The first to belt out a hysterical “bawk” like a teenage boy in puberty.  He’s also known around here as “Runty Roo” since he is the smallest. While he lacks size, he is not afraid to let Esmeralda know he is the Main Boss.  Last weekend he took to chasing Esmeralda around the run pecking at his head and leaving a bald patch on his head.  Since then- nothing. Peaceful coexistance.  I guess he made his point.

Esmeralda is curious.  The first to run and greet me and easily handled.  I think he is stunning with a beautiful spiky hairdo and blood-red wattles.  He’s a sweet rooster.

Let’s take a quick travel down memory lane. Since it was only 3 months ago can we really call it ‘memory lane’?

Oh doesn’t it just break your heart? After 6 that is SIX tries, I am still at my original 3 hens. 5 roosters went to good homes and one, well, let’s just say that he crowed too early one too many mornings . . . I love the picture progression – cuz that’s exactly how my “girls” turned into boys. I was in such denial, I looked up ( and found) YouTube videos of crowing hens. My girls are so happy now. But will I ever find them a 4th, so they can play golf in the back yard??
